Guide to Personal Happiness
Published in Paperback by Wilshire Book Co (April, 1986)
Authors: Albert Ellis and Irving Becker
Average review score:

Returning to Reason
I have just re-ordered this book, which I read long ago and wish to re-read. In a world of superstition and wishful thinking, where more and more people seem to adopt "New Age" religious placebos, or revert to traditional religious superstitions, shamanism, talking in tongues, scriving, haruscupating, reading the cards, contacting the collective unconscious, or dancing with rattlesnakes, a rational approach to anything, let alone personal psychological health, is rare and precious.

I remember Ellis's book as one which actually helped me feel better about myself, without any channeling, chanting, or charms. Ellis allows you to put yourself and your happiness above the tangle of external measures and standards, measures and standards which you have internalized. Ellis helps you realize that these critical standards are not a priori elements of your consciousness, but are actually the opinions of others which have been smuggled into your mind over the years.

I look forward to refreshing my self-knowledge in the light of reason. I look forward to re-reading Ellis.

A great introduction to Rational Emotive Therapy
I started to get into philosophy after I graduated college. I read books by Bertrand Russell and Ayn Rand. I thought Bertrand Russel was great because was he was so logical and down-to-earth. Then I discovered "A Guide to Personal Happiness" and it blew me away. The philosophy presented in this book was so logical, realistic and profound. In the first chapter he succinctly states why someone should put themselves first and go after personal happiness. In the next section, he then illustrates his therapy: All people seem to have grandiose notions about the world, other people and themselves. By giving up these notions using logical, realistic thinking, they can live better and rid themselves of emotional problems such as anger, anxiety, and depression. Ellis was one of the first psychologists to plainly state that faulty thinking causes most emotional disturbance. It seems to me to be almost a trivial observation. He basically shows you how to analyze your faulty thinking, which is almost trivial, and then shows you how to minimize it, which is really difficult. There are several chapters in the book, which are basically transcripts of a session using his therapy. I found them extremely fascinating and it really started to challenge a good deal of my thinking. The last chapter deals with self-actualization. It just a list of the things that bring people pleasure. I still refer to it when I feel depressed. It's a real pick-me up. I have read many books by Ellis and over the years and I'm amazed on how profound his ideas are. I don't always like what he says, but what he says is usually realistic.

Heart and Hands: Musical Instruments Makers of America

Authors: Nancy Ellis, Robert Bailey, and Jake Jacobson
Average review score:

Saw the Smithsonian exhibit
These are the pictures displayed in the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries building over the winter of 2001/2002. The people, the props (instruments), and the settings are all captivating. Catch the exhibit if you can!

Wow! Incredibly moving book
This is a huge book, full of beautiful photographs from musical instrument makers all across America. The photos are so well done that you feel you are right there. There are many intriguing quotes throughout the book from all of the instrument makers, that let you get into their thoughts and understand what motivates them. But each picture is worth a thousand words. Recommended.

How to Live With a Neurotic
Published in Paperback by Wilshire Book Co (February, 1986)
Author: Albert Ellis
Average review score:

Meets a Unique Need
The author does not assume that the reader will choose to live with someone seriously neurotic. That's the reader's choice. After making the choice to live with such a person, however, the reader will find strategies in this book to make that living situation as workable as possible. Nothing will make it easy; the book does provide effective tools that require discipline and practice.

These strategies, by the way, work well with non-family neurotics, such as co-workers and supervisors. The book focuses on how to live with behavior in others that we do not have the power to change. Sometimes, we can find no better option.

EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND INSITEFUL IN UNDERSTANDING A NEUROTIC
THIS IS A BOOK YOU CAN REFER TO TIME AND TIME AGAIN - THE INFORMATION IS EXTREMELY VALUABLE IN SAVING YOUR SANITY AND RELATIONSHIPS.

Waiting for the sequel
Move over Disney, Douglas Fir is takin' over! This is a wonderful book, complete with its very own music of top quality. Congratualtions to the authors - I think they started a saga here.

Wonderful storybook for all ages!
I am an assistant in a kindergarten class. As I shared the book with my kindergarten students, they were in awe. They have never sat so attentive while listening to a story. The songs and music throughout the story made it even more enjoyable. Once the story was completed there were many questions about the story that I was able to answer from the information given in the story. The story will be wonderful to share during earth day in all schools. Mr. Reitz had a book signing at our school. Do your childrens' school a favor and request that he visit their school!

Kiowa: A Woman Missionary in Indian Territory
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (March, 1998)
Authors: Isabel Crawford and Clyde Ellis
Average review score:

A valuable book
Isabel Crawford, a Canadian woman, came to southwest Oklahoma and was a missionary to the Kiowas for ten years. This book is a compilation of her journals which she kept faithfully throughout her years with the Kiowas, with entries that include personal reflection and testimonies from the Kiowa people. Crawford brought a unique perspective to life on a Native American reservation at the turn of the century. Crawford showed that most Kiowas respected her and she also had a favorable view of the Kiowas.

Most of her entries were written from a Christian's perspective and how she tried to share gospel with the Kiowas and in fact, many became Christians because of her. Crawford also with the help of the Kiowas built a church at Saddle Mountain, Oklahoma. Unlike some missionaries who preached to save the "savages", Crawford truly respected their cultural identity and in fact sought a middle ground, where cultural exchange took place. She told them that becoming a Christian would not change their identities.

This book is valuable because it contains speeches, conversations and testimonies given by the Kiowas which can help to increase our understanding of both their culture and the complexity of their relationship with missionaries.

The Missionary Trail
Isabel Crawford came fearlessly among the Kiowa Indians; among the last of the tribes to be confined to reservations. The work of all the missionaries transformed the lives of some of the Kiowa people and gave them a spiritual path that the Kiowa continue to follow. Crawford's recording of the words of these early Kiowa converts have the power to make one laugh and to weep. How poigniant the words of the old Kiowas, the so-called savages.

Last Will and Testament of a Lover: A Journey Through Grief
Published in Paperback by Stoddart Pub (October, 1997)
Author: Clifford R. Ellis
Average review score:

Poetry for a grieving Soul
Wonderfully written. I lost my wife last November and this book has helped me greatly to stay on the road of healing. I would recommend it to all Lover's out there.

A must read for anyone whose lost the love of their life.
I've read many books since my husband died. This book is at the top of the list. I found it on a shelf in a small book store while visiting relatives. Now I give it as a gift to others as the author gave it as a gift to his spouse. The messages are universal, the words are personal.
